An elderly gentleman Mr. Gurulingappa Masali owned 4 acres and some additional land in Loni village, Karnataka. He had visited Maher several times and would help Maher financially. He finally decided that this land should be donated to Maher. Sr. Lucy and the Board Members were initially reluctant, as it is a place where the culture and language were different. However, Mr. Masali kept phoning Sr. Lucy several times and finally, we took over the land.
In order to protect the land and also to complete the paperwork with no hindrances, it was necessary that a Maher staff stayed in Loni. So Sr. Lucy convinced Akshay Kanse, one of the staff of Maher (who grew up in Maher) and a housemother from Pune along with some women who could speak the local language, and sent them to Loni. At present, there are 6 women there. Akshay is seeing to the land and running of the home. Once we have our own home, we will move them.
